Can scratches be removed from glass? A Dubai owner's guide

Most fine scratches and hard water etching polish out of glass on site, no new pane needed. How to tell a surface scratch from a deep one, plus the restore-vs-replace math.

Yes. Most fine scratches, scuffs and hard water etching can be polished out of glass on site, without replacing the pane. Deep gouges that catch a fingernail are the exception. For shower screens, facades, balustrades and shopfronts in Dubai, restoration is usually faster and far cheaper than new glazing, and the result is optically clear again.

Why glass scratches and clouds in Dubai

Glass in the UAE takes a specific kind of punishment. Three causes account for most of the damage we see:

  • Hard water. Dubai's mineral rich water leaves scale on shower screens and glass railings. Left to dry, it etches the surface and reads as permanent cloudiness.
  • Sand and dust. Fine airborne sand is abrasive. Wiping a dusty pane with a dry cloth drags those particles across the surface and leaves a web of hairline scratches.
  • Cleaning mistakes. Scrapers, the wrong pads and gritty cloths put scratches into the very surface people are trying to clean.

The good news: almost all of this lives in the top microns of the glass, which is exactly what professional restoration works on.

Polish out, or replace? How to tell

Run a fingernail across the mark. If your nail does not catch, it is a surface scratch or etching and is a strong candidate for polishing. If it catches in a deep line or chip, that spot may need more work or, rarely, a new pane.

Restore on site Replace the pane
Typical cost A fraction of replacement Full glass plus fitting

Disruption Minimal, no removal Dismantling and refitting
Best for Scratches, scuffs, hard water etching Cracks, shattered or holed glass

Restore vs replace

Hours, not days

Glass restoration happens on site, with no removal and no reorder.

Stays in placeThe pane is never dismantled.
Optically clearPolished flush with the surrounding glass.
Far less costA fraction of new glazing and fitting.

What the restoration looks like

We assess the glass in the light, isolate the damaged zone, and polish it back with progressively finer compounds until the surface is optically clear and even with the glass around it. The pane stays in place. A final clean and a protective treatment slow down the next round of hard water build up. For a high rise balcony balustrade or a hotel shower screen, the panel is restored exactly where it is.

Frequently asked questions

Can you remove deep scratches from glass?

Deep scratches that catch a fingernail can sometimes be reduced rather than fully erased, depending on depth. Fine scratches, scuffs and hard water etching are routinely polished out completely. Send a photo and we will tell you honestly which category yours is.

Will the polished area look distorted?

No, when it is done correctly. The goal is an even surface flush with the surrounding glass, so the repair is not visible in normal light. Distortion comes from over aggressive spot grinding, which careful restoration avoids.

Is it cheaper than replacing the glass?

Almost always. You avoid the cost of new glass, the fitting, and the downtime of removal and reinstallation, which is why restoration typically costs a fraction of replacement.

Do you work on shower screens and facade glass in Dubai?

Yes. We restore shower screens, glass balustrades, partitions, shopfronts and facade glazing on site across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
